Day 98 - Rome Day 1 - Mama Olst Arrives!!!!

After our washing up at the hotel, we headed to the Rome airport to pick up Mama Olst. She would be arriving at 9:30 in the morning and we tried our hardest to be on time. But alas, the train from the station to the airport was running 15 minutes late, so we were a bit late too. Nevertheless, when we got there, there she was!!! It was fabulous to see her face and smile. Even though I talked with her often, seeing her face was such a pleasure. We grabbed her stuff and headed off to our hotel. We freshened up this time in the room and took off to the metro to check out the Spanish Steps and Piazza De Papolo.

I figured we might as well check some sights off the list while mom’s energy was up and she was doing well after her flight. We snagged the nearest metro, just a half block away from our hotel, and went to the Spanish Steps. Although there were a lot of folks on and around the steps, the sun was shining and the view and fountain were lovely. We zipped just around the corner to a little restaurant. Lunchtime was calling, some fried squash blossoms, cheese plate, seafood risotto, and spaghetti all’amatricana made for a tasty first lunch for mom.

We then proceeded to walk up the Spanish steps and towards the Piazzo Di Popolo (the plazza for the people). All of a sudden, there was hugh crash of thunder!!! Then reader, no rain followed, but instead, HAIL! Big Ass Hail! We were up the creek without a paddle. Hilarious! It died down a little and we went through the Popolo and headed to the metro station. Yes, we bought an umbrella on the way, very funny! Mom took a nose dive into the pillow and only awoke 5 hours later when I tempted her with a in-room picnic, then she was back to sleep, and I was not too far behind!

Oh, I showered that night too, rather lovely. The St. Peter’s Guest House hotel is quite the place to stay! It felt like coming home. Speaking of which, I am looking at a ticket to book back to the states.
