In Italy, it seems as though there is a holiday every other week. I don’t blame them, they are fun, a reason to celebrate, eat, drink, be merry, and throw confetti! Today, March 8th, 2011, is Women’s Day in Italy. This is a day separate from mothers day, it is a day to celebrate all woman. The ladies were out in full force and had planned the day to dine and shop. It was also the last day of Carnivale, plenty of kids and confetti.
We had set up a special menu for the dinner service. Five courses of tasty treats heading out the door to the potential customers. We spent most of the morning and afternoon prepping for the special menu. We did have a group of 9 come in for lunch, so it was good to see Drew and Frankie work the line. And then I had to make 7 desserts. It was pretty funny considering that the chocolate was not soft enough to use, even after multiple failed attempts to make a nice chocolate sauce.
Amongst all the prep and food, some Fresh Meat arrived. I am such a pest, the newest intern, Katie, arrived. She had flown in from Newark and from Johnson & Wales culinary school. A bit doe-eyed, but she is friends with Tyler and he spoke very highly of her. We wrapped up our prep heavy day by heading home for siesta. A short nap as my roomies watched their first episode of ‘An Idiot Abroad’ (of course due to my persuasion). We headed back to the restaurant and boy was it a party!
The streets were completely covered confetti, the kids had foam and silly string, and it felt like being back on the playground where the boys chased the girls. I picked my way through the kids and crowds as not to get hit by any flying paper. The cutest kid, about 4, had a whole handful of confetti in his hands and we went right up to two old grannies, big smile, and threw it right at them. Yes it hit their knees, but it was still really funny.
We were all ready for dinner service, electric feeling in the kitchen, however, no customers came all night. It was sort of sad. Yes, this is not an uncommon occurrence for us, but on such an eventful holiday, we had hoped that things would have gone differently. We were cleaned up and out of the restaurant in no time and back at the house after a quick stop at the internet cafe. Then home to celebrate me! Ha! A nice shower, a chapter in my book, and watching the Sum of All Fears. A nice end to the day.
Happy Women’s Day fellow Ladies! And no, there is no ‘Man’s Day’ in Italy, even better.
Ciao!
